Tips on choosing a domain name
Now that you know what is a domain, let’s go to choosing a domain name.
Some people view domain names as investments, and some even buy them for speculation believing that the price for the domain name will go up, and indeed some of them will! An example of a domain name for a blog that was sold for hefty price was bancaholic.com. (Sold for $15 million U.S) That is why it is very important to be wise in choosing a domain name. These are some tips I have personally come up with on choosing a domain name.
1.) If possible, don’t use your name or parts of your name – When I first started blogging, I just followed the probloggers. So when they used their names as their domain, I followed their lead in choosing a domain. Later on I learned that some probloggers regretted this and advised others not to do it. Unless your name is the same as that of a famous person, you won’t be able to sell the domain name itself for a high value. Well of course if you really like your name, then it is up to you. Of course this is the general rule, especially if you plan to go niche blogging. However this does not apply if you plan to go guerilla blogging.

2.) K.I.S.S – Keep It Short and Simple. The shorter the domain and the simpler it is the more people will have an easy time remembering what it is. Just like company names and product names, domain names must be short simple and of course easy to spell. (Who on earth would remember the domain name: Mahershalalhashbaz.com hehehe by the way it’s the longest name found in the Bible and believe it or not, somebody is actually using or trying to use this domain)
3.) Associate it with your content – Make your domain name more valuable by associating it with your content. Use keywords that are more or less the same with your content. Primarily this applies to niche blogging. For example if your content is about playing the violin then use something like www.playingtheviolin.com or something like that. If not use a domain that speaks about your online identity, just like my domain, the guerilla blogger. Search engines will place a certain premium on this. You will understand this later on a post on Search Engine Optimization. Again, this is a general rule and most especially applies if you want to go niche blogging. This rule does not apply to blogs that wish to go guerilla blogging. (Blogging about any stuff) Later on you will understand why is this.
4.) Use the .COM extension – Using the .COM is very important in choosing a domain. Despite what other people say, having a .com as your website is still the most popular choice.
5.) Don’t abbreviate – Never abbreviate when choosing a domain. Abbreviating makes your domain name meaningless. For example for my site if I instead of using guerillablogger.com, I used www.gb.com. It might be short and simple but it doesn’t mean anything to anybody else.
Now that you know what is a domain and have gotten tips on choosing a domain, let’s move over to getting a domain.
